Podiatry or podiatric medicine is a branch of medicine devoted to the study of diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and lower extremity.  Since our feet are the way we are able to get from place to place, there may be wear and tear to parts of our feet and ankles over time.  Most people will experience foot and or ankle pain at some point in their lifetime and when part of the foot becomes damaged or injured it can either directly or indirectly affect another part of the foot.

There are many different conditions that may cause your podiatrist to recommend surgery, some of those are bunions, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, flat feet, and ingrown toenails.

Bunion: a bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe.  A
bunion forms when your big toe pushes against your next toe, causing the joint
of your big toe to get bigger and stick out.  Wearing narrow shoes may cause
this to worsen and become more painful.

Hammertoe: Toes that are curled because their middle joints are bent.

Plantar Fasciitis: An inflammation of the tissue along the bottom of the foot that connects the heel bone to the toes. This tissue is called the plantar fascia.

Flat feet: The foot’s arch runs from the toes to the heel. Flat feet occur when their arches collapses to the ground.

Ingrown toenails: Occurs when the edge of the toenail grows into the skin. An ingrown toenail may cause pain and swelling.

Sacred Heart Hospital can provide complete surgical care for any of these conditions in addition to many others your podiatrist may diagnose you with.
