What is the Short Procedure Unit?
The procedure Short Procedure Unit (SPU) is designed to provide high quality one-day medical or surgical care without the added cost of an extended hospital stay. The short procedure concept allows patients to recuperate in the familiar surroundings of their homes, lessening anxiety as well as cost.

How Does It Work?

What Must I Do If My Physician Determines I Need Pre-admission Testing (PAT)?
A few days before your procedure:

  • The PAT coordinator will contact you to schedule an appointment at a time that is convenient for you.
  • On the day of your pre-admission testing, report to the Registration area. Be sure to bring your health insurance cards and forms.
  • The testing may take up to one hour depending on the studies ordered by your doctor.
  • At the time of your PAT, you will be given several forms to take home, complete, and bring back.
  • You may tour the SPU after your PAT. This may be particularly helpful to children to familiarize them with the unit.
  • The PAT staff will review your pre-operative instructions and answer any questions you may have.

Other Than Pre-Admission Testing, What Must I Do To Prepare For Surgery Or A Medical Procedure?
Before surgery or a procedure:

  • The afternoon or evening of the day before the procedure, you will be called after 4pm and be advised of your time to arrive at the hospital.
  • At this time, you will be instructed where to report on the day of your procedure.
  • Any additional pre-procedure instructions will be reviewed at that time.
  • If you are taking any medication, be prepared to discuss them with the SPU nurse when she calls with pre-operative instructions.
  • Have nothing to eat or drink after midnight unless instructed otherwise.
  • You may brush your teeth or rinse with mouthwash, but do not swallow anything.

On the day of my surgery or procedure, what must I do?

  • Report to the Registration area at the time designated by your doctor or by the telephone call from the Hospital the previous day.
  • Bring a robe and slippers if you wish.
  • Please leave large sums of money, credit cards, and all jewelry at home.
  • If you are a surgical patient, you will be asked to report approximately 2 hours prior to surgery time in order that your anesthesiologist may assess your anesthetic need and have you properly prepared.
  • Arrange to have someone accompany you throughout the procedure and take you home when you are discharged. You will not be permitted to leave the Hospital alone.

How Do I Get To Registration?
From the Chew Street parking garage, cross the street to the main entrance to the hospital. As you enter into the lobby, make an immediate left turn. Across the hallway is the Outpatient Registration Department.

How Do I Get To SPU?
The Short Procedure Unit is located on the fourth floor of the Hospital. From elevator 1, (which you will see directly in front of you as you enter the hospital's main lobby), go to the 4th floor. Turn right off the elevator, and then turn right again to enter the Butz Wing. At the first hallway, turn left. You will go down a long corridor and the doors to SPU will be on your right side, just before the EXIT doors. On the left will be the bridge to the Medical Office Building.

Please Remember
