Neuroscience
Neuroscience Services at Sacred Heart Hospital is a full spectrum
of inpatient and outpatient care. The outpatient facility brings
together the Thomas Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, the
Sacred Heart Sleep Disorder Center and a full Neurophysiology Lab
in one convenient location.
Neurophysiology Lab
The Neurophysiology Lab provides a wide range of neurophysiologic
tests, including EEG (electroencephalography); ambulatory EEG
(Digitrace); EMG (electromyography) and nerve conduction studies;
and auditory, visual and somatosensory evoked potentials.
These studies offer clinicians important information for diagnosing
neurologic disorders. The technical staff also provides operating
room support to our neurosurgical program by monitoring evoked
potentials during certain surgical procedures.
Thomas Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Sacred
Heart Hospital
The Thomas Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Sacred Heart Hospital is a cooperative effort between Thomas Jefferson University and Sacred Heart’s Neuroscience Services. It brings the expertise of world-renowned epileptologists to Lehigh Valley patients suffering from seizure disorders. Michael Sperling, M.D, Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program evaluates and treats patients in the outpatient suite, offering the most current therapy and treatment options. Treatment option include state of the art medical therapy, investigational drug therapy, vagal nerve stimulation (VNS), brain surgery, and the ketogenic diet. Advanced diagnostic techniques are also offered including video-EEG monitoring, ambulatory EEG, and MRI.
Inpatient Neuroscience
Inpatient Neuroscience at Sacred Heart includes a very
active neurosurgery program for patients with a wide range of brain
and spine disorders. We have six neurosurgeons on staff, a nurse
practitioner and clinical nurse specialist. The program performs
more than 800 surgeries annually. Our professional staff complete
specialized ongoing education. Committed to quality of care, the
neurosurgery program directs an outcome measurement program to
evaluate how our patient do post-operatively at three months and
then again at one year.
Because stroke is the leading cause of serious long-term disability
in the U.S., inpatient stroke care at Sacred Heart is a focus of
the neuroscience program. A well-defined protocol enables the Emergency
Department to identify and rapidly treat appropriate patients with
tPa therapy, the newest FDA-approved stroke treatment. If patients
don’t meet the criteria for tPa, we offer a full spectrum
of services to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate stroke victims.
A coordinated team approach enhances the inpatient stay and ensures
that all necessary therapies and education are completed for the
patients and their families. Many patients can receive their rehabilitation
here through our transitional care facility or Moss Rehab.
