Lanshe Women's Health Center
James
and Alice Lanshe
The Lanshes tireless support and selfless generosity have been evident at
Sacred Heart Hospital for decades. James Lanshe has been a member of the
Sacred Heart Board since 1944, during which time he spearheaded many fundraising
efforts on behalf of the hospital. His wife, Alice, has been a longtime hospital
volunteer and active member of the Sacred Heart Hospital Auxiliary. In commemoration
of their lifetime support of Sacred Heart Hospital, we are proud to honor
them with the naming of Sacred Heart’s James and Alice Lanshe Women's Health Center.
For most women, issues of breast health are deeply personal, involving
a wide range of emotions and issues of self esteem. At the James and Alice
Lanshe Women's Health Center, we understand the sensitive issues of breast health,
and the absolute need to respect our patient’s privacy.

of cancer
- For women age 40 and over, the necessity for yearly mammograms and

The People who Care for You
The Lanshe Women's Health Center relies on a team approach to preventing, detecting
and treating breast cancer. Our fully credentialed staff of physicians,
nurses and technologists are all specially trained in breast
care, and the unique health issues facing today’s women. From scheduling your
appointment through diagnosis and — if necessary — treatment
and follow-up care, our dedicated staff gives your case the prompt,
sensitive, individualized and confidential attention it deserves.
The Benefit of Early Detection
More than 182,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and
almost 41,000 women die from the disease annually. While breast cancer
remains the second-leading cause of cancer death among women (after lung
cancer), the number of women who have succumbed to the disease has declined
significantly in recent years—most likely the result of earlier
detection through mammography and improved treatments. In addition to
providing the most up-to-date information and education on early detection,
the Lanshe Women's Health Center offers complete education and leading-edge technology
to ensure fast, clear and reliable breast health diagnosis.
• Breast Self-Examination (BSE)
One of the simplest means of detecting the early stages of breast cancer,
BSE can be performed easily by any woman in the privacy of her home.
If you have questions about BSE, our staff can explain this simple technique
in just minutes.
• Mammography
The most widely used technique for diagnosing breast cancer early, mammography
uses x-rays to image breast tissue while it is lightly compressed between
two plastic plates. The compression only lasts a few seconds, and the
entire procedure takes only about 20 minutes.
• Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to locate abnormalities within breast
tissue. Like mammography, the technique is quick, painless and accurate.
Breast Biopsy: Making Sure
If mammogram or ultrasound tests reveal anything suspicious, our physicians
may recommend a biopsy — the most definitive means of identifying
cancer. A biopsy involves the removal of suspicious breast tissue for
laboratory analysis. In some cases, a surgical biopsy may be performed,
requiring the use of local or general anesthesia in a hospital surgical
suite. Other biopsy options include fine-needle aspiration and core needle
biopsy, which can be performed in the Lanshe Women's Health Center with only
local anesthesia.
For many patients, the Lanshe Women's Health Center offers the minimally invasive
Mammotome® Hand Held Breast Biopsy System. Using either stereotactic
x-ray or ultrasound guidance, the Mammotome procedure gently removes small
tissue samples through a small incision in the breast.
