Family Medicine Residency - Faculty
Richard T. Martin, M.D.
- Director of Residency and Geriatric Fellowship
Dr. Martin assumed the position of Program Director of the SHFM Residency in September of 2005. Dr. Martin joined the faculty at Sacred Heart in 2000, after many years of private practice and teaching in Canada, North Dakota and Minnesota. Just prior to joining, he was a member of the faculty at Michigan State University's residency program in Kalamazoo. He completed his medical school and residency at the University of Manitoba in Canada. He has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics and he directs the SHFMR’s Geriatric Fellowship program. He has twice received the residents “Teacher of the Year” award.
Thomas C McGinley, M.D.
- Associate Director
Dr. McGinley returned to his hometown by joining SHFMR faculty in 2003 after more than eight years teaching with Montgomery Family Practice Residency Program in Pennsylvania. He completed his Medical Degree at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, his B.S. at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA and his residency in Family Medicine at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, PA. He also completed a fellowship in faculty development at Duke University. He was acknowledged by the Temple University School of Medicine as the 1998 Blockley – Osler Award Winner for Teaching, and he was a two-time finalist for Drexel University School of Medicine’s Golden Apple teaching award. He coordinates curriculum development and recruitment of residents and his clinical interests include pediatric and adolescent medicine, office procedures, and behavioral medicine.
Stanley E. Yellin, M.D., M.B.A.
- Assistant Director
Dr. Yellin served as the program's residency director from 1999 to 2005. He became director during his second tenure here at Sacred Heart. He stepped down as director in order to devote more time to lecturing and teaching. He has prior teaching experience as faculty at Moses H. Cone Family Practice Residency in Greensboro, NC, where he completed his own residency. He has also spent many years in private practice in New Jersey. Dr. Yellin received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and his Medical Degree from Boston University School of Medicine and he completed a Faculty Development fellowship from UNC at Chapel Hill. He earned an MBA from Lehigh University in 1999. SHFM’s residents have acknowledged him twice as “Teacher of the Year". He coordinates predoctoral education
Smita Arora, M.D.

- Director of Obstetrics and Women’s Health Training
Dr. Arora joined the faculty of the Sacred Heart Family Medicine Residency Program in January 2005 after serving as family practice-obstetrics faculty at the Warren Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in Phillipsburg, NJ. After her own family medicine residency, Dr. Arora worked in a rural setting at Barnes Kasson Hospital in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania as an obstetrician and family practitioner, delivering babies extensively, including C-sections. She received her Medical Degree at Dayanand Medical College in Ludhiana, India, and has completed residencies both in OB-GYN in India and Family Medicine at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She has also completed a Faculty Development Fellowship from the University of North Carolina in 2004. Dr. Arora practices the complete spectrum of Family Centered Maternity Care and Women’s Health including C-sections, vacuum and forceps application, colposcopy and endometrial biopsy. She is an Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) instructor. She strongly believes family physicians are compassionate, skillful and competent physicians who provide leadership, patient advocacy and high quality maternity care. Dr. Arora has presented her research interests at national meetings.
Daniel H. Coller, M.D.

- Associate Director of Geriatric Fellowship
Dr. Coller joined the faculty of Sacred Heart in 2004 after 30 years as a faculty member and director of geriatric education for the Harrisburg Family Practice Residency Program where he received "Teacher of the Year" awards on several occasions, including his last two years. He has served as the Chairman of the Credentials and Bylaws Committees at the Pinnacle Health Systems in Harrisburg, PA, as well as Chairman of the Family Practice Department and as a member of the Board of Directors. He received his Medical Degree from Temple University School of Medicine, his BS at the Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA, and his residency in Family Medicine at the Harrisburg Hospital Family Practice Residency Program. He received his Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics in 1990. Dr. Coller is the Medical Director of the Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice Program. His clinical interests include geriatrics, end-of-life care, evidence-based medicine and inpatient care.
MaryEllen Kistler Strout, D.O.
- Director of Osteopathic Medical Education
Dr. Strout joined the faculty in November, 2007. Prior to that she was with Northampton Medical Associates, a large family practice, for seven years. She is also medical director of a medical spa in Bethlehem offering Botox, dermal fillers and laser treatments. Dr. Strout went to medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine after working for a nonprofit health insurance organization for several years. She graduated PCOM in 1993 and completed her rotating internship the next year at Suburban General Hospital in Norristown, PA where she was co-chief intern. Family practice residency was done at Crozer-Keystone Center for Family Health in Springfield, PA. She is boarded in family practice by both the Osteopathic and the Medical family practice boards. Dr. Strout runs an Osteopathic Manual Medicine (OMM) clinic at the residency where both the D.O. and the M.D. residents can learn manipulation skills.
Rae Connolly, M.D., M.Sc.
- Faculty Associate
Dr. Connolly joined the residency program in July 2006 after completion of her residency here at Sacred Heart. Following military service, Dr. Connolly worked full-time while attending Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a B.S. in Community Health. She then received her M.Sc. and M.D. degree from St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies before beginning her post-graduate training at Sacred Heart Family Medicine. During residency, Dr. Connolly served as Chief Resident and received the Paul L. Hermany Excellence in Teaching Award. Her interests include Multiple Sclerosis management and resident's board review, and teaching practical medicine.
Loretta Witczak Keil, M.D.
- Faculty Associate
Dr. Witczak Keil rejoined the faculty at SHFMR in 2000 after 12 years of outpatient service to the patients of Sacred Heart Hospital. Previously, she as a faculty member from 1984 to 1987 at SHFMR, serving as the Inpatient Medical Director. She also previously served as Sacred Heart Hospital’s Vice President of Medical Affairs. Dr. Witczak Keil completed her Medical Degree at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now Drexel University) and her residency in Internal Medicine at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA. She was awarded the 2004 “Teacher of the Year” award from the residents. Her clinical interests include cardiology and rheumatology.
Dawn’C Wilkes, M.D.
- Faculty Associate, Geriatric Fellowship
After prior careers as a teacher and nurse, Dr. Wilkes received her Medical Degree from Spartan Health Services School of Medicine in St. Lucia. She completed her residency in Family Medicine here at Sacred Heart. She received her B.S. in education from Ohio Dominican College in Columbus, OH and her B.S. in nursing from the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. She joined the faculty as associate director in 1999 after working in private practice for a number of years. SHFP’s residents have acknowledged her as “Teacher of the Year” in 2000. Dr. Wilkes is the Medical Director of the Sacred Heart Wound Care Center and has clinical interests in wound care and women’s health.
Leslie Carroll, M.D.
- Chair of Pediatrics
Dr. Carroll is a board-certified pediatrician who is chairperson of the department at Sacred Heart Hospital. She completed her Pediatric Residency at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., after obtaining her Medical Degree at Bologna University Medical School in Italy and her B.S. from SUNY at Binghamton. She and her colleagues help teach pediatric ambulatory and inpatient medicine. She has strong interests in adolescent medicine, ADHD, and pediatric immunizations. Dr Carroll is a past recipient of the residency’s "Teacher of the Year" Award.
John Turoczi, Ed.D.
- Behavioral Science Coordinator
Dr. Turoczi has been a member of SHFM since 1975, teaching behavioral medicine to the residents and running Balint groups. He received his Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, after receiving his B.S. from Muhlenberg College in Allentown. PA. Dr. Turoczi also runs his own private practice. He is a previous recipient of the residency’s “Teacher of the Year” award.
Nancy Trawin, Ed.D.
- Behavioral Science Faculty
Dr. Trawin joined the SHFMR residency in 1988 to teach behavioral medicine to the residents. She received her Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA after receiving her M.A. from Montclair State College, in Montclair, NJ. She supervises the videotape review of resident patient encounters. She also maintains a private practice in Wescosville, PA.
Joseph M. Daday, M.D.
- Faculty Preceptor
Dr. Daday returned to SHFM as a faculty preceptor in 2001. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Sacred Heart after completing medical school at Temple University School of Medicine and college at University of Notre Dame. He has enjoyed a variety of experiences in his career including service with the National Health Services Corp., private rural practice, co-residency director of a family practice residency and urban/occupational medical practice. Dr. Daday is also president of the Lehigh County Medical Society.
Michael Hortner, M.D.
- Faculty Preceptor
Dr. Hortner joined the faculty in 2006 as a faculty preceptor. He obtained both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his residency in Family Medicine at The University of Connecticut. While in private practice, he continued his affiliation with the Family Medicine Residency at the University of Connecticut as a clinical instructor for 3 years. After moving to the Lehigh Valley in 1986, Dr. Hortner spent the next 20 years in clinical practice where he has always enjoyed teaching medical students, residents, and physician assistant students. Other clinical interests include aesthetic medicine and problem wound care. He is also currently an associate with the Sacred Heart Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Center.
Edward Curran, M.S.W.
- Social Services
Mr. Curran is a licensed clinical social worker. He teaches residents and assists the residency’s patients. He received his B.S. from LaSalle College in Philadelphia and his M.S.W. from West Virginia University. Ed is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and is a diplomat in clinical social work. He speaks Spanish and has had Hispanic cultural experience serving in the peace corps in Central America for over two years. Ed is an adjunct sociology professor at DeSales University in Center Valley, PA. He has a particular interest in children’s mental health. Ed is excitedly waiting the publication of his wife Janice’s first book.
Kelli Mills, M.A.
- Program Administrator
After a career in business and finance, Kelli attended a program at Lehigh Community College for medical assistant training, and joined the Sacred Heart family in 1994. Actually she was here much earlier than that...she was born at Sacred Heart. She brings with her a wide range of experience and her responsibilities include recruiting, licensing, scheduling, and keeping twenty plus doctors organized.
