Sacred Heart Hospital Awarded $100,000 Grant from Susan G. Komen

ALLENTOWN, PA – Sacred Heart Hospital was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure on March 4, 2009. The Philadelphia Affiliate distributes grants to organizations that work with the medically underserved, including uninsured and underinsured individuals and individuals who may not receive adequate care because of barriers such as language, cultural differences, and fear.

Sacred Heart Hospital is working with the Allentown Health Bureau, the Wellness Community of the Lehigh Valley, Community Professional Services, and the Black Women’s Health Initiative to provide educational and screening programs to meet the breast health awareness needs of 1,500 women living at or below the federal poverty guidelines.

This grant will enable Sacred Heart Hospital to provide 400 free mammograms for uninsured and underinsured patients at the Lanshe Women’s Health Center with funds for follow-up diagnostic mammograms. The grant also provides for verbal and printed breast education in Spanish, Arabic, and English for soup kitchens, parish nursing locations, Saturday Free Clinics, and local churches. A telephone care management system has been established to inform patients about free mammograms and to remind patients about appointments.

Sacred Heart Hospital is a 233-bed Catholic medical center located in central Allentown, Pa. Founded in 1912, Sacred Heart Hospital offers a wide range of advanced medical services ranging from acute rehabilitation to bariatric services to adult psychiatric services.
