Orthopedics is the study of the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic doctors specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of problems of your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Orthopedics surgeons and specialists use both surgical and non-surgical interventions to treat fractures, joint replacements, knee and hip problems, sports injuries, and more.
If you ever experience severe pain that comes on suddenly, have suffered a severe sports injury, were in a motor vehicle accident, or have suffered some other type of traumatic injury, please call 911 or visit the nearest Emergency Department for prompt medical attention. Emergency physicians and staff will be able to provide the critical care and treatment you need.
For non-urgent orthopedic care, Sacred Heart HealthCare System offers access to orthopedic specialists that can treat a wide range of conditions that include:
- Traumatic injuries
- Hip problems
- Knee problems
- Foot and ankle problems
- Hand and wrist problems
- Elbow problems
- Shoulder problems
- Arthritis (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis)
- Sports injuries
Orthopedic conditions are often first treated with medication, physical therapy, braces, splinting, and/or exercise. If non-surgical options have failed to alleviate an orthopedic condition, surgery may be your only option. Sacred Heart Hospital has a full-service operating room (OR) that performs orthopedic procedures that include:
- Total or partial joint replacement
- Joint fusion
- Osteotomy (procedure that distributes weight more evenly across joint cartilage by repositioning the joint and shifting weight away from damaged cartilage)
- Arthroscopy (procedure used to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint)
To be properly diagnosed or to evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment, you may need to have an imaging procedure, such as an MRI or an X-ray, performed. Sacred Heart Hospital and Sacred Heart Imaging Northampton, an affiliate of Sacred Heart HealthCare System, provide a wide range of imaging services.
As part of your treatment or following surgery, you may be prescribed physical therapy or occupational therapy. Sacred Heart HealthCare System provides physical therapy and occupational therapy at an off-campus site in Allentown.
