What is Adjustable Gastric Banding?

Adjustable gastric banding surgery is suited for individuals who are 100 pounds or more over their ideal body weight and have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40, or a BMI greater than 35 coupled with certain obesity-related medical conditions. If your BMI is greater than 35, you may have an obesity-related medical condition you are unaware of, so bariatric surgery may still be an option.

Most adjustable gastric banding surgery candidates have been unsuccessful losing weight in the past through diet and exercise. They may also suffer from significant and serious health problems such as hypertension, sleep apnea, or diabetes associated with their excess weight. Adjustable gastric banding surgery is therefore designed to decrease the many life-threatening risk factors associated with excess weight while simultaneously increasing the ability to enjoy daily living.

Adjustable gastric banding surgery is a minimally invasive laparoscopic weight loss procedure. Your surgeon will place an adjustable inflatable silicone band around the stomach to create two pouches: a small upper pouch and a larger lower pouch. The inflatable band narrows the channel between the small upper pouch and the larger lower pouch, which helps to slow down the emptying of the smaller upper pouch.

The adjustable gastric band restricts the amount of food you can eat to about one ounce at a time, which allows you to lose weight. Adjustable gastric banding also helps to create a feeling of fullness (sustained or prolonged satiety) but does not interfere with nutrient absorption. There are less serious complications associated with adjustable gastric banding since the natural body systems are maintained.

The adjustable band is attached to a dome-like structure called a port just beneath the skin in your abdomen. To further restrict or to loosen the band around your stomach, your doctor can inject saline solution into the band to tighten it, or remove saline solution from the band to loosen it through this port. Through tightening or loosening the band around your stomach, your doctor can help control or reduce any side effects and improve your weight loss.
