Jim Metula, bariatric social worker, presented results of a study conducted in 2012 by Dr. Wendy King from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health at the ASMBS Conference in san Diego about how alcohol could be addicting for those who had the RNY bariatric surgery.  In the study 70% had RNY surgery and 30% had other WLS.  The discovery was that alcohol is metabolized differently in RNY bariatrics as compared to normal people due to the size of the pouch.  So if RNY bariatrics indulged in alcohol, they would become intoxicated much faster than a normal person based on the rate of alcohol absorption in the body.  A contributing factor to this phenomenon is that in RNY patients there is no gastric acid to break down the alcohol in the system; therefore, tolerance to alcohol is developed.   It can become addictive.

It was a very good, but sobering speech that we needed to hear as RNY bariatric patients.

THANK YOU!
