Hi Ashleigh, you are in good hands with Dr. Holland and his very capable staff.

The only suggestions I would offer is really listen to what they tell you. Start eating right now, drink lots of fluids, start taking your vitamins now too so that isn't such a chore after surgery and attend support group.  You can find a wealth of information at support groups.

I had my surgery January 9, 2012 and have lost a total of 120 pounds.  I am not a huge protein person so that is a something I dread but I keep trying anyway.  I would definitely recommend this to anyone but caution, it is a life change, not simply a diet.  There will be things you might not be able to eat but I know for me, I needed to look at food differently.  I found out I am a stress eater.  My oldest daughter went off to college and I ate myself sick.  I don't do that anymore, well not as much anyway Whistling

Each person will handle surgery differently, make sure you have a solid support system, that may sound basic but is huge when it comes to our success.  We got fat alone, (mostly), we can't get skinny alone... we need that support to help us along this path.  Emotional issues are still going to be here when you get out of surgery so having that support system really helps you (all of us) work out any issues and helps us realize food is not the best answer to any problem...

When do you go for surgery?

Good luck.

Welcome Ashleigh!  With Dr. Holland, you will be in the best of surgical hands.  I had RNY surgery with Dr. Holland 3 1/2 years ago and I will continue singing his praises because he saved my life from obesity with this great surgery.  Sure, I was scared before deciding to go through with it, but having RNY surgery was the best health decision in my life.  No regrets, only praises!

Hi Ashleigh,

I'll just start by saying that being one of the younger people I know of to have gone through this surgery (I'm only 25) I can definitely feel you on this. I, personally, had been contemplating it for years, but could never work up the courage to take the step I needed to take until I saw two people go through it first-hand, and got to say to myself everyday "Wow, they're living their lives, nothing bad happened, they're just picking right up and moving on."

I finally made that decision, which was a big step for me due to many things other than my simple wariness of surgical procedures Smile I had gastric bypass with Dr. Holland on August 14th, 2012. I'm just about 6 months out, and now that I've gone through it, I would make the same decision again in a heartbeat. I was lucky enough not to have any of the co-morbidities they talk about, but my BMI was so high it was a viable option for me, and I saw my dad being diagnosed with diabetes, and knew that I have heart problems that run in my family. It hasn't always been a cakewalk (forgive the reference Tongue) but every day as I learn new little things about my body and what I can and can't eat, and actually coming to the realization that just the thought of certain (favorite) foods makes me feel queasy, just makes it that much easier. I'm glad I made this decision while I was still young enough to have a life ahead of me. I want to get married and have kids, but I wanted to be able to run around with them, see grandchildren and great-grandchildren! I knew that I needed to do this now, while I still could!

Again, it's not the easy way out that so many people see it as, and even I used to look at it that way. But then you learn that, as Dr. Holland says, it's a tool: the most powerful tool in my box, and I use it everyday, and take care of it, and definitely don't take it for granted. So while it's not easy everyday, I think of the alternative, and then it's still a great day!

Good luck! And definitely message me if you have any questions or anything! I'm no nurse or doctor, but I can give you insight or support if you need it!!

Tristyn
