Hello everyone! Today is my 4th day post op and everything seems to getting better. One thing i'm starting to notice is more leg cramps! I went for a short walk like i've been doing and i really can feel the cramps! Feels like when you get a charlie horse around your calf area. Is this something to be worried about? My legs are not swollen or red or warm to the touch. Please need some advise. Thanks again!

Hi Rosie!  I am not sure what is causing your leg cramps, but since there is no swelling nor redness, that is a good sign.

The bariatric-medical experts tell us to keep moving our bodies post op to get rid ourselves of surgery gases and to also to avoid leg thrombosis (blood clots in the legs that can travel to the heart and cause a heart attack if unchecked).  That is why they gave us post operative socks to wear in bed while recuperating.

Nowadays, When I get a leg cramp from my running, overexercising or competing in races, I was instructed by my nutritionist Dorothy at St. Luke's to drink G2 (Gatorade 2) because the cramping in the legs is a sign that our body's electrolyte count is down.  So I drink Gatorade 2 or eat a banana and the leg cramps go away.

Post op, you can drink the G2, but you are not allowed to eat bananas yet for a while.

I am not giving medical advice, but I am just writing what worked for me.  If the leg cramping continues, call Dr. Holland's office to find out what you should do about it.

I never had leg cramps post op.  Maybe others did.

Thanks nadia! My sister in law had surgery a few yrs ago and said it might be from not drinking enough water, so i will try water and the g2 and see if it helps. If not then i'll call dr hollands office! Thanks again!

I found a cure for my leg cramps - potassium.

The week after my surgery, my left leg swelled up a lot.  I went back in the hospital, they determined it was not a clot, but they helped me drain fluid.  Well, it seems we overshot the runway, so to speak.  when i got home, I found whenever I would stand up, the room would spin like mad.  They determined it was dehydration, and back into the hospital I went.  The night I went back in the hospital, I had 2 bad leg cramps.  Normally I would get out of bed and walk around, but because they had those bariatric beds that had those raised sides on them, I couldn't get out of the bed.  Anyway, the next day the doctor came in and told me that the problem was that my potassium level was extremely low.  So they pumped me via IV and with pills with potassium, and I stopped having the leg cramps.  Now I use potassium on a regular basis, and I rarerly ever have leg cramps.

My Mom was having leg cramp problems, too.  I suggested potassium to her, she tried it, and that worked for her.

Potassium is available over-the-counter, so you should be able to get it at a drug store.

Radio Man,  Potassium is a great suggestion.  When I was following the LA Weight Loss Diet, the counselors told me to take a potassium tablet daily and a pinch of salt for iodine.  What you say makes lots of sense and I hope that it helps our Rosie.

At four day post-op; I doubt your potassium would have been low - as in the hospital, they fill you up with TONS of vitamins through your IV.

However, in any normal circumstance (especially after having had WLS) potassium can deplete, thus, showing symptoms of leg cramping.

Once you are far enough out & able - add some banana to your protein shake (if you do shakes).

Also, make sure you are staying well hydrated.

I had to be on potassium chloride the first year, b/c I was insufficient & was having a lot of cramping while exercising.

Hope your situation rectifies itself soon!

Rosie, How are the leg cramps?  Do you still have them or do you feel better?
