I've had a few people ask about the 5 Day Pouch Test.  Here are the basics:

The 5-Day Pouch Test is a program we use to get ourselves back into proper eating habits.

Here is the basic idea:

Days One & Two: Liquid Protein
low-carb protein shakes, broth, clear or cream soups, sugar-free gelatin and pudding.

Day 3: Soft Protien
canned fish (tuna or salmon) eggs, fresh soft fish (tilapia, sole, orange roughy.

Day 4: Firm Protein
ground meat (turkey, beef, chicken, lamb), shellfish, scallops, lobster, fresh salmon or halibut.

Day 5: Solid Protein
white meat poultry, beef steak, pork, lamb, wild game.

The progarm is outlined here, along with recipe ideas and more:

Radio Man,  Thanks for sharing the 5 day pouch test and recipes.  I printed the information and placed it in a folder just in case I would ever need it.

I'm back to doing this again.  Day 1 today--doing great!  I got some Carnation Instant Breakfast--has protein.  Unfortuantely, they didn't have the sugar-free version, so I got the one with sugar for now.  I'll have to try one of the other stores in our area, although most don't carry the sugar-free version either.  Maybe I'll have to order it online.

Jim, Carnation does put out a "No-Sugar Added" Essentials (it comes in a blue box/container rather than the yellow) and I've seen it at Redners if you have one by you.  I'm not sure how much sugar is in it but it may be lower than the regular one.

Good luck. I'm so glad you are getting back to the program and wish you all the best.  Thank you also for the information. I shall make sure I keep it handy.

Are you going to be able to meet at Trexler Park for the June meeting?

Yes, I usually can get the no-sugar version at the store near where I work.  Just this time they didn't have it.

I did okay until that night, then I went off it completely. I'm going to restart it next week on Monday.

If I ever get hungry in the evening or night and to make sure that I do not eat or snack, I waterload or I go to bed.

Sometimes our bodies mistake tiredness for wanting to eat.  By going to sleep, I wake up the next day feeling great fully rested and without the regret that I ate something.

Something to think about.....

After reading about the 5 day pouch test on this bariatric forum, I wanted to read what other health/bariatric professionals said about the validity of this test and whether it really works or not...  I am a skeptic at heart and always like to challenge the authorities.  I hope that I do not offend anyone with my posting.  That is not my intention.  I want to cerebrally challenge the intellects of our readers.  I think that people need to hear all sides of the story before making their minds up about weight loss tests.  So here are some findings that I have read about:

One bariatric dietitian wrote that she read medical reports stating that the size of the pouch did not dictate weight loss.  That it was indeed the BEHAVIOR the person adapted that contributed to the weight loss or lack of weight loss.

Other discoveries stated that even patients with larger pouches did better than some patients with smaller pouches.  It was based on their adherence to the rules of bariatrics or returning to the basics in behavior modification.

Other studies shown that the size of the hole at the bottom of the stoma connecting to the bowel can also affect weight loss if the hole there was smaller.

All of the studies promoted getting to the basics and behavior modification---portion control and daily exercise.

Thanks Nadia for posting your findings. I currently have started seeing the scale start upwards again. I will be doing the 5 day to get myself back into the rhythm of being compliant again.

Lots of stress here and less activity have caused me to see the scale move back up a little.

For those that remember me, I am involved with Teener League baseball and this year I returned to college at 46. The stress of school and the other positions I hold with baseball, church and other organizations have caused me to forget about myself and I started back on my poor eating habits again.

I have to get those ole bariatric rules out again and re-internalize them again.

The problem I have found is, all my bari-friends have now faded away. I have tried to resurrect the group, but everytime it is very short lived. This is why I returned back here. I need like minded friends and I miss being accountable amongst friends!

Good luck Jim on your 5 day. I am hoping to start Monday. I just have to get stuff in to do it.
