Hi Everyone, I have finally made the decision to have the surgery with Dr. Holland, date set for May 23rd! As I am sure all of you were, I am scared and excited! Right now trying to "digest" all of this information! I need some help with the vitamins and protein drinks. If I take a multivitamin with "B" do I still need to take the "B's" also, any good suggestions for vitamin types... I have never been a vitamin taker... Also, does anyone have any tips for finding protein drinks - what to look for etc? I want to make sure I start this process now, so I get used to them, as well as taking time to eat etc!

PS I just want to say that I have read many posts, and I think this is GREAT! Even though a lot of people had complications, I have not seen or talk to anyone that regrets this decision, so I am in good company and looking forward to the journey! Thanks for sharing any information you possibly can!
Trish

Trish,

You will be in very good hands.  Dr. Holland is ultra professional and a great surgeon.

I have been taking the Bariatric Advantage brand multivitamins, B12 in addition to the b vitamins in multivitamins and calcium citrate.  If you are menstruating, you will need to take iron as well.  Also, it is advised to take biotin to prevent hair loss before and after your RNY surgery.  As far as protein supplements go, I use the following:  Unjury, Bariatric Advantage,  All The Whey and Chike.

Hi, Trisha, and welcome to your new life decision!!! I am so happy and excited for you. I know what you're going through and I know you'll have a lot of questions. I hope I can offer some help.
I started my process by meeting Dr. Okolicha 3/18/10 and I weighed in at 326. God, there were sooo many tests and appointments, it almost felt endless. I weighed in at 295 the day of surgery, 9/27/10 (15 of the pounds lost were the result of the week-long liquid diet!). As of this morning(2/26/11) I weigh 228.6!!!! only a few pounds from 100 total! It is so different now and my life is a lot better, physically and mentally.
Enough gloating, I do have some helpful hints for you. I wish I had taken the advice early in the program, such as exercising more. But I did succeed at drinking enough fluids and taking my vitamins. I use the liquid b12, chewable equate vitamins, vitamin D, and Viactive - all of which I purchased at Walmart. Also, to help myself keep count of the liquid intake, I bought a 65 oz water bottle there, too, for $2!
As for protein mixes, I swear by Pure Unflavored Whey Protein Isolate. It's produced by BariatricEating.com. I purchased it on-line, but now we're fortunate to have a representative who comes to the support meetings. She'll be at the next meeting in March. Her name is Donna Riles and she can be contacted at bariatric@rcn.com. She usually has samples at the meetings, too! It's $25 a bag and I add it to my morning cup of tea and mix with with S/F hawaiian punch in my water bottle. Sometimes I also supplement my liquid protein with Atkins low carb protein drinks or AES low carb protein drinks.
I hope these hints help.
Good luck on your journey! I wish you all the best. BTW, I haven't had any problems with my surgery and am very happy with my decision to have it. Dr. O really went out of his way in my opinion, too. My surgery was expected to last 2 - 3 hrs. and lasted 6 because I had so much scar tissue from previous surgeries. Plus, he still took the time to do my gastric bypass using laparoscopy rather than giving me a large incision. I am still grateful. I hope to see you at the next support group meeting! And introduce yourself so we can all put a face to the name!

Tina - Viactiv is Calcium Carbonate; not Citrate....we better absorb the Citrate, so you may want to re-evaluate that & purchase new ones once you run out.

Trish - again, welcome.  I take the chewable bariatric fusion vitamins (four a day).  I also supplement extra Iron with Vitron C (Vit C aids in the absorption of the Iron).  Just make sure your RDA amounts are at least 200% (most 'regular' vitamins are 100% so you would need to take two).  As far as Calcium, make sure it's Citrate (better absorbed & can be taken with or without food).  Vitamins that are chewable are better for RNY patients for the first 6 months post-op.

I like Unjury, Chike & also the Bariatric Fusion Shakes, as well as Syntrax (for protein supplementation).  Any protein shake/drink should be low carbs, low or not fat, 120-140 cals max per serving, and watch sugar content as well.  I usually make mine with a banana and skim milk.

I guess I must be missing it, but there used to be a calendar with the up coming meeting dates and times and what the meeting would be about on the web site/forum. Could someone please tell me where that would be or give me upcoming information for the next few months? I would love to try to start attending the meetings when I can. Thanks in advance,, Have a wonderful and safe day!

I don't believe they post the meetings on the calendar anymore; but I will see if I can find where the flyer is that shows what the meetings are coming up.  I only made it to one meeting so far this year; I will be there next week though.

Hey, if you are interested; we also have a long-term post-op meeting for patients who are 2+ years out & strugling.  It's held the first Thursday of every month from 7-9 in the conference rooms that are located to the left side of the auditorium.  Maybe you would consider this group?

Hope to catch ya at a meeting soon!
