It's falling out in CLUMPS. What the heck? Is this normal and will it stop or at least slow down? Can I take anything to help it? Please tell me I am not going bald. I really don't think I'd look good in a weave.

I did a lot of research before my surgery and was aware that hair loss was in my future.  I started experience this at about 4 months.  It has been 2 months now and it has lessened and I am not bald. Make sure you are eating the protein that is recommended.  Also, I drink a protein shake about 3 times a week.  Have you thought of trying this?

I experienced hair loss after my daughter was born and I too thought I was going to go bald.  Hang in there, and this will pass.

My hair starting thinning a lot at about three months and has been going (falling?) steady since.  I wash my hair every other day and it seems I end up with a little bird's nest in the drain.  My hairdresser cut my hair shorter and gave me bangs so that there'd be less in the drain and the scalp wouldn't be as obvious if you don't see a part or my forehead.  I think we've shocked our systems with far fewer calories in the last few months.  Ultimately, it will realize that this is the new norm and the thinning process should stop.  I hope. w00t

I have been dealing with the hair loss for three weeks now.  My hair is very long and just seems to get thinner by the day Sad

Kaitie - It's absolutely "normal" to lose hair after losing a lot of weight; whether you do it "on your own" or have WLS.  Your body is lacking protein/nutrients and doesn't know what to think.  I started losing mine at about month 3 and it lasted a good 2 months.  I'm over 15-months out and at a year; I started again, but this time it only lasted around a month.  I never got "bald". They just "thin out" a bit.  It can be disheartening to lose your hair.  As everyone is different, I can't tell you exactly how long it'll last or how much; but just hang in there.  It will start coming back!!!!

Katie,

I have been trying to research the hair loss.  There is not much information out there about it.

My hair started thinning around the 3rd month.  I am now 7 months and it still comes out in the drain but seems to be lessening. But have no fear , you will not bald!

I guess because our bodies get thinner our hair does not want to be left out of the loop so it gets " thinner " also.(hehehe)

It is very frustrating for me, my hair was the one thing I used to feel good about.  But now I overlook the thinning hair and look at my new body and feel great!!

Talk to your hairdresser, he/she can come up with a new style that helps to disguise the hair loss ( as Barb did).

My hair has thinned on the top more than anywhere else.  Is this is where you are having the most hair loss?

This is a big issue for me also. No one else notices it but I freakout a little each day when I do my hair. Couple of things I'm doing

Focus on protein

Don't forget your vitamins. I also added Biotin 2500mcg, I think that has helped a little

Got my hair cut shorter

I also use Nixion shampoo & cond. - you can get in on the web or from your hairdresser.

My hair started falling out at about 3 months and just recently stopped. I didn't use any hair products- It was REALLY REALLY bad for awhile.  I also don't wash it everyday, usually every other or so.  This will soon pass, a small price to pay.

My hair started falling out at about 3 months after surgery and it got so bad that I had to use drano in the shower drain a couple of times. I cut my hair into a cute shorter style and started taking 5 mg Biotin from Bariatric Advantage once a day.

After about a month it stopped falling out and started to grow back in. I now have little hairs all over my head that are just over an inch long. I think its great news because it all seems to be growing back. I use Samy "Icing" hair restyler on those small hairs because it glues them down perfectly and nobody can tell.

My favorite part is that I've lost almost 100 pounds and when I run into people I haven't seen for a while they look at me an say "OMG...you've cut your hair! you look fabulous!". They think its some AMAZING haircut that instantly takes off 100 pounds!
