Just want to introduce myself. I am new at this. I am not having surgery until May 7. I am a bit nervous. My daughter and I are doing this together. She is having surgery a week later. We will have each other for support. I think this is a big step for the two of us. I am nervous though. Any advice?

Dreed, Since both you and your daughter are having bariatric surgery, you will have each other to rely on for support throughout your weight loss journies and in the future.  That is a benefit.

Remember, eating small portions and exercising will be a life change.  You have to be mentally ready for the change.  For me there came a mental shift from: Live to eat to Eat to Life (for survival reasons).  Also, for me, exercise became as important as sleeping, eating and breathing.  I do 5 miles everyday (even when sick) no excuses.

The surgeons at Sacred Heart are awesome.  You will be in good hands.

Just remember why you have made this decision, to live a better quality of life.  Sometimes the improvements are slow coming but we did not get the size we are slowly, so give yourself some love and realize that if you need time, take it.  It is great that you and your daughter will be able to support each other.  Rely on others as well, attend the support groups offered, we are here to help as well.

Nothing is worse than having an expectation and that expectation not being what you thought.  If you want, set goals but don't beat yourself up if you have not achieved the goal, you may need time. Each journey through this process is individual.  I had a horrible time in the beginning, I was horribly sick, had terrible stress but I am very grateful I went through the surgery.  Now a year later rather than wearing 3X clothing I am in a size 6 and probably could be smaller if I got rid of the excess skin but not really looking into that yet.

If you have questions, ask, that is what we and your most capable doctors, are here for.

Good luck and congrats!!!

thanks..I went to support group last month and I found it very informative. My daughter and I will both be there tonight. This will be the first time for her. She goes to college and is home on spring break. I think this would be good for her to go to. I know she is so excited for surgery and to go back to college next fall a new person. We will be each others rock through out this whole process. We both have started on the vitamins and exercising.

again thanks
